Monday, June 21

It is a nice sunny morning. We had a couple cups of coffee with breakfast as we relaxed and got things ready for our day today. We started out on our longest hike yet. We began about 9 am to hike to Leinert Bay on the north side. After about 45 minutes of hiking, Bert and Rhonda from Apopka stopped on the road and asked if we wanted a ride! If wasn't a long distance left to go but a welcome ride. After getting dropped off at Leinert Bay, we still had about a mile walk along the bay to get to the north east corner where the good snorkeling was. Waterlemon (yes, not melon but lemon) Bay and Waterlemon Cay (pronounced 'key') was where the action was. We swam out around the Cay (okay, it's a big rock) and saw some beautiful coral and some of the larger fish we have seen yet. The waves were a bit strong on the back side which made us a little nervous but all went well. As we left, we met up again with Bert & Rhonda who offered us another ride if we wanted to wait around.

We walked back out of Leinert to check out the Annaberg ruins. It is one of the larger old sugar (and rum) mills that used to exist on the island. It was a short sidelight but interesting history. Kind of amazing to think of the hard work that went into both the building and the processing of the sugar.

We started our walk back (got a short uphill ride in the back of a pickup) and then stopped by Maho Bay on the way back. The new item here was the Starfish. We also got to swim with another turtle.

We found our way back home at that point to a quiet evening of dinner and some more reading. A light rain this evening just in time to cover up the sunset again. :(
